If you’re anything like us, when you hear the words summer time, you immediately begin making a mental checklist of all the things you want to do and accomplish. And if you’re anything like us, your list probably includes at least a few of the following things: the beach, swimming, a little sun bathing, a cookout with friends, serving somewhere with your church, a little summer reading…
Sound familiar??
For the next few weeks, we thought we’d focus in on that summer reading list. Many of you read a lot throughout the school year, but the summer is when you get a few minutes to simply read for YOU. Do you already have a list of books lined up? If not, let us help. We try to do some reading here or there, so thought we’d share some books we’ve found to be particularly encouraging to us and our reading time over the last few months.
First up – a few suggestions from
Denise:
If you’re interested in doing a short Bible study over the summer, I have two that I’d like to suggest.
The first is from up & coming author, Kelly Minter, whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with. Nehemiah, a Bible study she published last year is a wonderful study through the life of the Nehemiah and the compelling brokenness of his heart towards sin and his people, Israel. If you want a gripping study that will place you face to face with the need to love the lost world, this study is it.
The second study I’d like to recommend is called Gideon. It’s the newest release from Priscilla Shirer and I am just finishing it up. It has simply been excellent. Priscilla has is gifted at bringing out the smallest details in the text of God’s word and showing the significance we so often miss. This is a six week study that follows the life of Gideon. It’s one of my top picks!
My third recommendation is a book written by Nik Ripken called The Insanity of God. Nik writes his families personal story of living in Somalia amongst true evil and spiritual darkness and what it’s like to question God’s faithfulness in a place where the Gospel doesn’t seem to be enough. Want a book that’ll both challenge and undergird your faith in the Father? This is it!
We hope these three suggestions will at least help you get started on your summer reading!
